Hidden shower mold causing our coughs and headaches?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot for the past month and I’ve started getting headaches that I never used to get. I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around our master bathroom shower in our JVC villa and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it, completely hidden from view. The bathroom doesn’t even have a window so the humidity just stays in there after showers. Could this hidden mold be the cause of our health issues, and is it safe for me to just scrub it with bleach myself or do I need to call a professional?

Yes, hidden mold like this is a very likely cause of the symptoms you and your children are experiencing. The persistent coughs and new headaches are common reactions to prolonged exposure to mold spores, which become airborne as they grow in damp, enclosed spaces. Bathrooms without windows are particularly problematic in Dubai's climate, as the high ambient humidity gets trapped with no way to escape, creating a perfect environment for mold to thrive behind sealants and tiles.
Scrubbing visible mold with bleach is a common approach, but it is often ineffective for the situation you describe. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration you can see; it does not penetrate porous materials like grout or the wall behind the sealant to kill the root structure of the mold. Furthermore, the act of scrubbing can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially making your symptoms worse in the short term. For a significant hidden infestation, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The remediation process involves more than just cleaning; it requires safely removing the contaminated sealant, assessing and treating the underlying substrate for hidden growth, addressing the source of moisture, and then reinstalling with appropriate, mold-resistant materials. Crucially, the space must be properly contained during work to prevent spreading spores throughout your villa. Given the health symptoms present, verifying the mold's complete removal through post-remediation testing, often involving air and surface samples analyzed by a microbiology lab, is the only way to confirm the environment is safe again. For long-term prevention, installing a high-quality bathroom exhaust fan that is vented to the outside is essential to manage the humidity. |
