How can I clean and prevent black mold from AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a little, and I've just discovered a patch of black mold in the carpet behind the bedroom wardrobe. It's been so humid lately in Dubai Marina that everything feels damp. What's the most effective way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I prevent it from coming back?

The black mold behind your wardrobe is a common issue in Dubai Marina apartments, primarily caused by the AC condensation leak and our high ambient humidity. Start by fixing the AC leak—this is non-negotiable. Until the moisture source is stopped, the mold will return.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces like carpet. Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier; this is critical in our climate.

However, mold behind furniture often indicates a larger problem. The carpet backing and padding underneath are likely saturated and will require removal and replacement to truly solve it. If the affected area is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty smell or health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find all hidden moisture and can perform lab analysis to identify the mold type.

To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to prevent condensation leaks. Maintain indoor humidity levels below 60% using your AC's dry mode or a dedicated dehumidifier. Improve air circulation by not pushing furniture completely against walls, especially exterior walls which are prone to condensation.
