How can I permanently remove mold behind my sofa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. I think it started after the heavy humidity we had a few weeks ago, and the room always feels a bit damp. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without having to call in a professional team right away?

The black mold growth behind your sofa is a classic symptom of condensation and poor air circulation, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity and year-round AC use. The wall is likely a thermal bridge, cooler than the room's dew point, causing moisture to condense and create a perfect environment for mold.

For a permanent DIY solution, you must first address the moisture source. Move the sofa at least six inches from the wall to drastically improve airflow. Use a dehumidifier in that room, aiming to maintain indoor relative humidity below 60%. Clean the visible mold with a solution of detergent and warm water, not bleach, as bleach does not kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried.

However, what you see is often just the surface manifestation. Mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate porous materials like drywall and plaster. A permanent fix may require cutting out and replacing the affected section of wall if the growth is extensive or has been present for a long time.

Given the persistent damp feeling and the fact the mold returned after a humidity event, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our teams use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden cold spots and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact dampness source, which is critical for a permanent solution. DIY efforts often fail because they treat the symptom, not the underlying cause.
