How can I permanently remove mold from my Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get a bunch of black mold spots, and it's ruined a couple of my good jackets. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for a few years, but this only appeared after the recent heavy humidity. I’ve wiped it down with bleach, but it just comes back in a week. What’s the most effective, long-term solution to kill it for good and stop it from returning, especially with our climate?

Bleach only removes surface mold you can see, not the root system within porous materials like drywall, which is why it returns. The humidity in Jumeirah provides a constant moisture source, making this a persistent issue until you address the underlying cause.

The most effective, long-term solution requires three steps: finding the moisture source, properly removing contaminated materials, and controlling the indoor climate. First, inspect for condensation from an AC duct running inside that closet wall or a minor, hidden leak from recent rains. A professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera is often necessary to pinpoint this in villas, as the source is rarely where the mold appears.

For removal, simply wiping is insufficient. Porous materials like the back of the closet drywall or insulation are likely infested and must be carefully removed and bagged to prevent spreading spores. Non-porous surfaces can then be treated with antimicrobial solutions designed for mold remediation, not just household bleach.

Finally, to prevent recurrence, you must control the environment. Ensure your AC is running consistently to manage humidity, even when the room is unoccupied. Consider installing a standalone dehumidifier in the closet or improving air circulation with a small vent fan. For a permanent fix, especially with Dubai's climate, a professional remediation that includes air sealing and moisture barrier installation is the only way to guarantee it doesn't return.
