How can I permanently stop bathroom mold after showering?« Back to Previous Page

Our bathroom in the Jumeirah Park villa has no window and after every shower, the steam just hangs in the air for ages. I’ve been wiping down the walls but last week I spotted these black speckles in the grout between the tiles near the ceiling. I run the exhaust fan but it doesn’t seem powerful enough. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from coming back for good?

Bathroom mould in Dubai is almost always a moisture and ventilation issue. Your windowless bathroom with lingering steam creates the perfect environment for mould spores, which are always present in the air, to colonise. The black speckles in the grout are a clear sign that humidity levels are staying too high for too long after your showers.
The most effective permanent solution requires a multi-step approach. First, you must physically remove the existing mould. For surface mould on non-porous tile, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product applied with a stiff brush can be effective. Always wear a mask during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. However, if the mould has penetrated the porous grout, surface cleaning will only be a temporary fix; the grout may need professional deep cleaning or replacement to remove the root structure. Stopping it from returning hinges on controlling humidity. Your exhaust fan is likely undersized for the volume of the room. Run it during and for at least 30-45 minutes after every shower. To test its efficacy, hold a single square of toilet paper to the vent grill while it's on; if it doesn't hold the paper firmly in place, the fan isn't moving enough air and should be replaced with a higher-capacity model. Also, leave the bathroom door open after showering to allow moist air to dissipate into the rest of the house, which is typically drier due to air conditioning. Wiping down wet walls and the shower stall immediately after use is an excellent habit, as it removes the primary water source before it can evaporate and raise humidity. In a climate with Dubai's high ambient humidity, a small dehumidifier placed in the bathroom can provide a significant boost in moisture removal, especially if ventilation remains a challenge. For persistent or recurring mould despite these measures, a professional inspection can identify hidden problems, such as mould growth inside the ceiling void or behind tiles, and assess the extent of the issue. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the mould species, which informs the appropriate remediation protocol. |
