How can I remove and prevent mold in my AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif seems to be constantly damp, and I've just spotted small black spots around the vent in my toddler's bedroom. I'm really worried about his health and want to tackle this properly. What's the most effective way to clean this and stop the mold from coming back in our humid climate?

For the black spots around the vent, use a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a mild detergent. Wipe the visible area thoroughly, then dry it completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not address the underlying moisture problem.

However, this only addresses surface contamination. The constant dampness you describe indicates a deeper issue within the AC system itself, likely caused by a clogged condensate drain line or insufficient insulation on the ducting, both common in Dubai's climate where ACs run constantly. The moisture inside the unit is the root cause, and the spores you see are just the symptom.

For a toddler's bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the internal evaporator coils and air ducts, as this is where mould colonies thrive. A proper remediation involves specialised equipment to clean the entire system and apply antimicrobial solutions, followed by verification that the spore count has been reduced to acceptable levels. Companies with their own microbiology lab can provide this documented proof of cleanliness.

To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC unit is serviced at least twice a year. A key request is for the technician to clear and sanitise the condensate drain pan and line. Maintaining your indoor humidity below 60% with a dehumidifier can also significantly reduce the conditions that allow mould to regrow.
