How can I remove mold from my Dubai storage room myself?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a small storage room under the stairs where we keep winter clothes and some of the kids' old toys. Ever since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago, I’ve noticed a few black speckles on a couple of the fabric storage boxes, and my youngest has been sneezing a lot more. What’s the most effective way to deal with this mold without having to throw everything out and is it something I can handle myself or do I need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah villa, you are likely dealing with a surface-level mold growth triggered by Dubai's high humidity, particularly when combined with a confined, poorly ventilated space like an under-stairs storage. This environment creates condensation, which, when absorbed by cardboard and fabric, provides the perfect breeding ground for mold spores.

For a small, contained area, a DIY approach can be attempted with strict safety precautions. First, ensure you are wearing an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection to prevent exposure. Remove all items from the storage room. For non-porous surfaces like walls and shelves, a solution of detergent and warm water can be used to scrub the visible growth. For more persistent stains, a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective, but ensure the area is extremely well-ventilated during and after application.

The fabric storage boxes and clothing must be laundered in hot water if the fabric permits. Items that cannot be washed may need to be professionally dry-cleaned. Porous materials like cardboard boxes should be discarded, as mold penetrates deep into the fibers and cannot be fully remediated.

The critical step is addressing the moisture source. In Dubai, this is almost always ambient humidity and condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must improve ventilation. Consider installing a small exhaust fan or a dehumidifier in that space. Keep the area dry and avoid storing items directly against exterior walls.

However, given the health symptoms you mentioned (increased sneezing), this indicates that spores have become airborne. If the visible growth covers more than a few square feet, or if you discover it has spread to the wall cavity or structure, DIY methods are insufficient and can aerosolize spores, worsening the problem.

For a thorough and guaranteed solution that protects your family's health and your property, a professional inspection and remediation are strongly advised. We at Saniservice specialize in such scenarios, using industrial-grade HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatments, and moisture mapping to ensure complete removal and prevention.
