How can I safely remove black mold for my child's health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mould behind our 4-year-old's wardrobe in the master bedroom. It must have been there a while because his allergies have been awful lately, especially at night. With this humidity, I'm worried it's spreading inside the walls. How can I safely clean this myself to make sure it's gone for good without making my son's breathing worse?

Black mould behind furniture is common in Dubai's humid climate, especially when air circulation is poor. For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself, but strict safety measures are crucial to protect your son.
First, isolate the area. Keep your child and family members out of the room during the entire process. Open a window for ventilation if possible. You will need an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Before cleaning, lightly mist the mould with water to prevent spores from becoming airborne. Clean the area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it primarily discolours mould without killing the roots and its fumes can aggravate respiratory issues. Scrub the area thoroughly. After cleaning, wipe the surface dry completely. Use a dehumidifier or your AC to keep the room's humidity below 60% to prevent regrowth. However, given that the mould was hidden for some time and your son's allergies have worsened, there is a significant chance the mould has penetrated the wall or is growing inside the cavity. Disturbing it could release a large number of spores. For any suspected hidden growth, a professional inspection with a borescope is the only way to verify the full extent. They can also identify the species, as some types of black mould are more allergenic than others. In many cases here, the drywall itself must be removed and replaced to properly remediate the problem. For your child's health, an assessment is the safest first step to ensure it is truly gone for good. |
