How can I safely remove black mold without harsh chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I just found patches of black mold behind the toilet in our main bathroom. It's been so humid the last few weeks that even with the AC on, the towels never feel completely dry. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. For a small patch (less than one square foot) behind the toilet, you can safely handle it yourself with non-chemical solutions.

Start by mixing a solution of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, using a 1:1 ratio. Spray it generously on the moldy area and let it sit for at least an hour. The acetic acid in vinegar is a mild disinfectant that kills most common mold types. For stubborn spots, undiluted vinegar can be more effective. After soaking, scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, then wipe it clean with water and dry it thoroughly with a rag. Always wear a disposable mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.

The most critical step is to address the moisture source. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working correctly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showers. Wipe down wet surfaces like walls and tiles after use. Consider using a portable dehumidifier in the bathroom if towels never fully dry.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth may be more extensive inside the walls. In such cases, or if the coughing persists, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and full extent, which is crucial for families with health concerns.
