How can I safely remove mold or when to call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots appearing along the bottom of the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. I'm really worried about my family's health and damaging the apartment. What is the most effective and safe way to remove this mold myself, and when should I definitely call a professional company instead?

The damp feeling and black spots on an interior wall are classic signs of a humidity issue, very common here due to our climate. The constant AC can create significant temperature differences that lead to condensation, especially behind large furniture blocking airflow.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't address the root cause or the health risk from spores. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dried with a fan. Crucially, move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, as this is likely the primary cause.

You should call a professional company if the mold covers a larger area, has returned after previous cleaning, or if there's a musty odour. Professionals are necessary when the source is a hidden leak within the wall or AC system, which requires specialized equipment to locate. A certified inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For rentals, involve your landlord immediately, as structural moisture issues are typically their responsibility to fix.
