How do I clean AC mold in my closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom closet in my Jumeirah villa seems to be leaking a little, and now I'm finding black spots on the back wall and on some of my leather bags. I had the AC unit serviced last week, but the musty smell is still there. What's the most effective way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading before it ruins more of my stuff?

Black spots from an AC leak indicate active mold growth, which is common in Dubai's humid climate where condensation provides constant moisture. The musty smell persisting after a service suggests the internal drip pan or drain line is still clogged, allowing water to leak into the wall cavity.

For a temporary DIY clean on non-porous surfaces like the wall, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water; vinegar can penetrate porous materials better than bleach for initial treatment. Scrub the visible mold off the wall. For your leather bags, wipe them down with a diluted vinegar solution and allow them to dry completely away from the humid area, as mold can permanently damage leather.

However, this only addresses surface mold you can see. The leak is the primary issue. If the internal drip pan or drain line remains blocked, moisture will return and the mold will regrow inside the wall, which is a much larger problem. The 2021 Dubai Municipality guidelines for air conditioning systems emphasize that addressing the source of moisture is the first step in any remediation process.

Given the location in a closet and the damage to personal items, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a borescope to check inside the wall for hidden growth and use moisture meters to ensure the leak is fully resolved. Without stopping the water source, DIY cleaning is a temporary fix.
