How do I clean black mold after AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I've discovered black mold spreading on the back wall and even on some of our shoes stored there. I had maintenance fix the leak last week, but I'm worried about just wiping the visible stuff away. How can I properly clean this area and treat it to make sure the mold doesn't just come back in this humid weather?

Dry the area completely first. The leak may be fixed, but residual moisture in the wall cavity is the real problem. Run a dehumidifier in the closed room for at least 24-48 hours. For non-porous surfaces like the AC unit or shoe exteriors, scrub with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water).

Porous materials are a different issue. Drywall and cardboard shoe boxes absorb moisture and cannot be fully cleaned; they typically need to be discarded. For leather or treated shoes, a thorough cleaning may be sufficient.

Given Dubai's high humidity, simply wiping the surface is a temporary fix. The mold's root system (hyphae) can penetrate porous wall surfaces. If the visible patch is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, the wall likely requires professional remediation. This involves controlled removal of affected drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. A post-remediation verification test is the only way to confirm the space is truly mold-free.
