How do I remove black mold and stop it returning?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black mold I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because this past month's humidity made it worse. I’m worried about it spreading to our clothes and affecting their health. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in Dubai's climate is a common issue due to high humidity and constant AC use, which can create condensation in hidden spots like closets. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. First, isolate the area and wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores.
Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Scrub the affected surface thoroughly. Avoid just spraying and wiping, as this can aerosolize spores. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. Discard any moldy porous items like cardboard boxes. To stop it from returning, you must address the moisture source. In a closet, this is often due to poor air circulation or a cold spot from an AC duct causing condensation. Leave space between your clothes and the wall, use a dehumidifier in the room, or install a small battery-operated vent fan in the closet to keep air moving. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to maintain proper humidity control. However, if the mold covers a large area, keeps returning despite your efforts, or if your family is experiencing persistent respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify hidden dampness and lab testing to confirm the mold type, which is crucial for assessing health risks and ensuring the remediation is complete. |
