How much does mold removal cost and is DIY safe?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Mirdif is covered in black spots. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after pulling out the winter clothes, and it’s definitely gotten worse since the heavy rains in March. I’m worried about the health effects and the cost of fixing it. What’s the realistic price range for professional mold remediation for a small room, and is it absolutely necessary to hire experts or can a determined DIYer handle this?

Costs for professional mold remediation in a UAE villa typically start around AED 1,500 for a small, contained area like a single-wall closet and can increase significantly based on the extent of the damage and required structural repairs. The final price is determined by the square footage affected, the need for containment to prevent spore spread, and whether the underlying moisture source requires fixing.

DIY is not recommended in your case. The black spots spreading after heavy rain indicate a persistent moisture issue, likely from water intrusion through the external villa wall or severe condensation from temperature differences between the AC-cooled room and the hot outside wall. A determined DIYer might temporarily clean surface mold with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but this will fail if the hidden moisture source isn't identified and corrected. More importantly, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading them to other parts of the house and exacerbating health risks like respiratory irritation and allergies.

For a situation worsened by Dubai's climate, a professional inspection is necessary. Experts use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact cause—be it a leak, capillary rise from the foundation, or condensation within the wall cavity. Remediation then involves fixing that source, properly containing the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, and HEPA vacuuming to clear spores. This scientific approach, often backed by post-remediation verification testing, is the only way to ensure it doesn't return.
