How to check for mold in kids' bedroom safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Mirdif villa has started to feel damp, especially on the walls behind their wardrobe. Both of them have been sneezing more than usual in the mornings and I’m really worried it’s mold growing because of the humidity. What’s the most effective way to check for hidden mold and prevent it from coming back, especially with children in the house?

Given your situation in Mirdif, the combination of high humidity and poor ventilation behind furniture is a classic recipe for mold growth, which could absolutely be causing those allergy symptoms in your kids.

Safely checking for mold starts with a visual and olfactory inspection. First, move the wardrobe away from the wall. Look for any visible discoloration—black, green, or grey speckles or smudges. A musty, earthy odor is also a very strong indicator of hidden mold. For a more thorough check without disturbing potential spores, you can use a simple moisture meter from a hardware store; a reading consistently above 60% relative humidity on that wall surface is a major red flag.

However, for a definitive answer, especially with children's health involved, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use specialized tools like borescopes to see inside cavities and air quality pumps to collect spore samples for lab analysis. This identifies the exact species and concentration, which is crucial for understanding the health risk and planning remediation. DIY checks can accidentally disturb large colonies, causing a widespread release of allergens.

To prevent its return, you must control the humidity. Ensure your AC is running consistently and is correctly sized for the room. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier, especially during the more humid winter months. Crucially, leave a 2-3 inch gap between large furniture and the wall to allow for proper air circulation.
