How to clean AC mold and prevent leaks?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom’s AC unit has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these small black spots starting to form on the base of the wall nearby. I’m really worried it’s black mold, especially with the humidity lately. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading, and how can I prevent the AC from leaking like this again?

The black spots are likely mold growth from the moisture, a common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. For a small area, you can clean it yourself by first fixing the leak. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall base with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Ensure the area is thoroughly dried with a fan afterward.
The AC leak is the root cause and must be addressed to prevent recurrence. The most common reasons for a bedroom AC unit leaking are a clogged condensate drain line or a dirty air filter causing ice buildup that later melts. Turn off the unit, check and replace the air filter if it's dirty, and inspect the drain pan and line for blockages. Pouring a cup of warm water mixed with a little vinegar down the drain line can help clear minor clogs. If the black spots return quickly after cleaning, cover an area larger than your hand, or if you or family members experience persistent sinus issues or headaches, this indicates a more established problem. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the growth behind the wall and within the AC unit itself, as these are not visible. Proper remediation for established growth requires containment and specialized cleaning to prevent spores from spreading throughout the home. |
