How to clean AC mold and prevent sinus headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif seems to be constantly damp, and I've started getting these awful sinus headaches every morning. I noticed some black specks around the vent in the master bedroom last week when I changed the filter. We run the AC non-stop because of the heat, but I'm worried it's making us sick. What's the most effective way to clean the unit and prevent this mold from coming back?

The black specks around your vent are a clear sign of microbial growth, and your sinus headaches are a common reaction to the spores being circulated. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, as condensation inside the unit never fully dries.

For a thorough cleaning, the entire system needs to be addressed, not just the visible vent. This involves accessing and cleaning the evaporator coils, drain pan, and ductwork to remove the biofilm that spores grow on. While some DIY coil cleaners exist, improper use can damage the unit or aerosolize spores. A professional inspection is the most effective first step to assess the extent of the growth inside the unit and ducts.

Prevention focuses on controlling moisture. Ensure your AC drain line is clear and flowing freely to prevent water from backing up into the unit. Keeping the drain pan treated with an anti-microbial solution can help. Most importantly, have a professional service include a full system sanitization as part of your annual AC maintenance, which is a common practice for villas in the UAE. This is the most reliable way to prevent recurrence and protect your indoor air quality year-round.
