How to clean AC mold in JVC apartment vent?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell, especially when I first turn it on in my Jumeirah Village Circle bedroom. I’ve noticed a few small black spots starting to form around the edges of the vent. I clean the filters regularly, but this keeps happening. What’s the most effective way to clean the inside of the AC unit to prevent this mold from coming back?

The damp smell and black spots are classic signs of mold growth inside the AC unit, a common issue in JVC due to high humidity and constant condensation from year-round AC use. Cleaning the filters isn't enough, as the mold colony is likely thriving on the damp evaporator coils and in the drip pan inside the unit.
For a thorough DIY clean, you'll need to access the evaporator coils. Turn off the AC's circuit breaker for safety. Remove the front panel to expose the coils. Use a soft brush to gently dislodge surface mold, then spray the coils with an EPA-approved coil cleaner, following the product's instructions precisely. Allow it to foam and penetrate for the recommended time before rinsing it off with a low-pressure spray bottle of water, being extremely careful not to wet any electrical components. The drain pan and drain line should also be flushed with a vinegar solution to clear organic sludge. However, this is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The mold will almost certainly return. For a persistent problem, a professional inspection is the most effective path. They use borescopes to inspect deep inside the ductwork and can perform a full system clean with industrial-grade HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments that are not available to consumers. In Dubai, many buildings require such work to be performed by a DM-approved contractor to maintain your warranty. The key to prevention is controlling humidity; ensure your AC is correctly sized and running efficiently to remove moisture effectively. |
