How to clean AC mold in my Jumeirah apartment?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom of our Jumeirah apartment has started blowing out this weird, damp smell every time it kicks on. I just pulled the filter out and the plastic vents behind it look like they have black fuzzy spots growing on them. What's the best way to get this cleaned properly and is there a specific maintenance routine I should be doing to stop it from coming back every summer?

The black fuzzy spots are likely mold growth, which is common in Dubai due to the high humidity levels and constant condensation inside AC units. For a Jumeirah apartment, this is a frequent issue, especially in the summer.

For a thorough cleaning, the entire indoor evaporator coil and condensate drain pan need to be accessed and cleaned with specialized, non-abrasive antimicrobial solutions. This often requires partial disassembly of the AC unit. Simply wiping the visible vent slats is a superficial fix and won't address the root of the problem inside the system. A professional service with the right tools and EPA-approved disinfectants is recommended for this job to ensure the mold is properly treated and spores aren't spread throughout your apartment.

To prevent recurrence, a strict maintenance routine is key. Replace or deeply clean your AC's air filter every month during peak summer usage. Ensure the condensate drain line is flushed with a vinegar solution quarterly to prevent clogs that cause standing water. Most importantly, run your AC's dry mode function for an hour each day if available; this significantly reduces internal moisture by circulating dry air, creating an environment where mold struggles to grow. Keeping your apartment's general humidity below 60% with a dehumidifier can also provide a major assist.
