How to clean AC mold on carpet and wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a little bit of water onto the carpet below the unit for a couple of months. We've been wiping it up, but now we've moved the couch and found a patch of black mold on the carpet and the wall behind it. What's the best, most thorough way to clean this ourselves to make sure it doesn't come back, or is this a job for a professional company here in Dubai?

This requires immediate attention due to Dubai's high humidity, which allows mold to thrive. For a small patch (under 1 square foot), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall and carpet area with a solution of detergent and water, then disinfect with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). The carpet padding underneath is likely contaminated and must be removed and replaced; this is the most critical step to prevent recurrence.

Given the leak has persisted for months, the mold growth inside the wall cavity or under the floor is likely more extensive than what's visible. The AC unit itself must also be inspected for microbial growth, as it is the moisture source.

For a leak of this duration, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess hidden damage. Remediation often involves removing sections of drywall and flooring to properly dry and treat the structure. In Dubai, reputable companies should provide a detailed lab report identifying the mold species and verifying clearance after remediation, which is vital for your health and property records. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing the hidden moisture and mold will result in it returning.
