How to clean AC vent and prevent mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making my whole master bedroom smell damp, and I just found small black spots around the vent. We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and this only started after that last big humidity spike a few weeks ago. What’s the best way to clean the vent properly and who should I call to get the AC unit itself checked to stop this from coming back?

The black spots around your vent are likely surface mold, a common issue in Dubai after humidity spikes. For cleaning the vent cover, turn the AC off, remove the vent, and wash it with a solution of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely before reinstalling.

To prevent it from returning, the AC unit itself must be inspected. The damp smell points to moisture inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which you cannot clean yourself. In Dubai's climate, AC units constantly battle humidity, and condensation buildup inside the system is the primary cause of recurrent mold growth.

You should call a professional HVAC or indoor air quality company for a full system inspection. They can assess the evaporator coils, drain pan, and ducts for microbial growth. Look for a provider that uses documented methods, like video scoping, and can provide before-and-after evidence of remediation, not just a superficial clean. For severe or recurring issues, a full mold assessment with air and surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab is the only way to identify the species and source conclusively. This stops the cycle of temporary cleaning and regrowth.
