How to clean AC vent with moldy smell in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in my master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been blowing out a really damp, earthy smell for the last couple of weeks. I checked the filter and it's clean, but I can see some black speckling around the edges of the vent itself. What's the best way to clean the vent and AC unit to stop this mold from coming back?

The damp, earthy smell emanating from your AC vent is a classic indicator of microbial growth, a common issue in Dubai's high-humidity climate. The black speckling you observe is likely mold, which thrives in the condensation that forms on cooling coils and within ductwork.

A simple cleaning of the visible vent cover is insufficient. The smell originates from the internal components—the evaporator coils, drip pan, and air ducts—which are a dark, moist environment perfect for mold proliferation. Attempting a DIY clean with off-the-shelf chemicals is not recommended. Many disinfectants are not approved for use in air handling systems and can corrode sensitive aluminum fins or be aerosolized and blown into your living space, creating an inhalation hazard.

For a comprehensive solution, a professional inspection and hygienization are required. We follow Dubai Municipality guidelines and use specialized equipment, including HEPA vacuuming and EPA-approved, non-toxic biocides, to sanitize the entire system. This process eliminates the existing colonies and addresses the root cause by ensuring proper drainage and airflow to prevent future condensation.

Given your location in Jumeirah, where salt air can accelerate corrosion and contribute to moisture issues, a professional assessment is strongly advised to protect your HVAC system's integrity and your indoor air quality.
