How to clean adn dry AC leak mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a few days, and now I'm seeing a small black spot growing in the corner. It's been so humid lately in our Dubai Marina apartment that I'm terrified it's going to spread. What's the absolute best way to clean this small area and dry it out completely to prevent it from coming back?

First, fix the AC leak immediately to stop the moisture source. This is the single most important step; cleaning is pointless if the area stays wet.
For a small, isolated spot (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a dedicated mould remover. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the mould roots. Dry the area thoroughly and completely using a wet/dry vacuum to extract water from the carpet pad and a powerful fan for at least 24-48 hours. In Dubai's high humidity, a dehumidifier is essential to pull moisture from the air and prevent immediate regrowth. Be aware that the visible spot is often just the surface. Mould can grow into the drywall behind or the carpet backing and pad underneath, which is nearly impossible to dry fully without professional equipment. If the spot is larger than a square foot, has a musty odour, or returns after cleaning, the remediation is beyond a DIY fix. Given the persistent humidity and condensation issues in Dubai Marina apartments, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and ensure it's properly resolved. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness you can't see. |
