How to clean adn is black mold dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the back of our master bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall and even on some of our winter clothes. I think it might be from the AC unit that's right next to it, as it always feels damp in that corner.
What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and should I be worried about my family's health from breathing this in?

Black mold in your wardrobe is a health concern, especially for family members with allergies, asthma, or weakened immune systems. It can cause persistent coughing, congestion, and skin irritation. The dampness you feel confirms the high humidity and condensation from your AC unit is creating the perfect environment for it to grow.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with one part water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for the surface). Scrub the affected wall and surfaces thoroughly. For clothes, wash them with hot water and a mold-inhibiting detergent. However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source. The root cause is almost certainly the AC’s condensate drain line or a leak saturating the wall. This is a very common issue in Dubai due to year-round AC operation creating constant condensation. DIY cleaning will likely be temporary if the moisture problem isn't fixed. For a recurring issue of this scale, a professional inspection is advised to identify and rectify the AC fault and assess if mold has spread inside the wall cavity. They can also perform air or surface sampling to confirm the mold type and the extent of the contamination, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. |
