How to clean adn prevent mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has had a constant humidity problem, especially during the summer. I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall to find a few small black patches of mold growing behind it, which must have been there for a while. We run the AC non-stop but I guess the lack of air circulation in that spot caused it. What’s the best way to clean this off the wall safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, especially behind large pieces of furniture?

For small patches, use a solution of 70% white vinegar and 30% water, or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area gently, let it sit for 15 minutes, then wipe dry. Never mix cleaning chemicals. For porous surfaces like drywall, the mold may have penetrated deeply, and cutting out and replacing the affected section is often the only permanent solution.

Preventing its return requires addressing the humidity and lack of air circulation. In Dubai's climate, condensation forms easily on cold walls behind furniture that blocks AC airflow. Move large pieces like sofas at least 2-3 inches away from the wall. A small, battery-operated hygrometer can monitor humidity in that spot; aim to keep it below 60%. Run a dehumidifier in the room or ensure your AC system is properly sized and maintained to manage humidity, not just temperature.

For a recurring or large-scale problem (over a few square feet), a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source and assess the wall's condition. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness. Remediation in the UAE should follow standards like the IICRC S520, which ensures containment and proper removal to prevent spores from spreading.
