How to clean and prevent AC mold in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing a faint, damp smell into the master bedroom, and I just found a few small black spots in the corner behind the wardrobe. We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and this never happened before. What’s the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, especially with the humidity rising again?

A faint damp smell and black spots are classic signs of AC mold, a common issue in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for growth. The best approach depends on the extent of the contamination.

For the visible spots behind the wardrobe, you can clean a small area yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted detergent. Scrub the area gently, dry it immediately, and bag any cleaning materials to dispose of them. Do not use bleach, as it only discolors the surface and does not kill the mold roots.

However, the smell from the AC unit suggests the growth is likely inside the system itself, in the evaporator coils or drip pan where condensation accumulates. This is not a DIY cleaning job, as improper chemicals can damage the coils and spread spores throughout your apartment. This requires a professional AC and duct cleaning service that uses EPA-approved, non-toxic biocides and can properly access and clean the internal components.

To prevent recurrence, the key is controlling moisture. Ensure your AC drain line is not clogged; a yearly professional service can check this. Keep the bedroom door open to improve air circulation. Run the AC's fan mode for 30 minutes after showering or cooking to help reduce indoor humidity. For a long-term solution in a humid climate like JVC, consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid summer months, to keep relative humidity below 60%.
