How to clean and prevent AC mold in JLT?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these small black spots around the vent on the ceiling. I live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers and I know the humidity here is a nightmare. What’s the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back without having to call maintenance every time?

Black spots around the AC vent are a strong indicator of mould growth inside the unit, a common issue in JLT due to the high humidity and constant condensation in AC systems. The damp smell confirms active microbial growth.
For cleaning, first turn off the AC at the circuit breaker. Wipe the accessible vent slats and surrounding ceiling area with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a few drops of tea tree oil diluted in water. Do not use bleach, as it cannot penetrate porous materials to kill the root and its fumes in an enclosed space are problematic. Prevention is more critical. Ensure your AC drain line is not clogged, as standing water is the primary cause. Keep the drip pan clear. Run the fan mode for 30 minutes after turning off the cooling to help dry the internal coils. Maintain your indoor humidity below 60% using a dehumidifier if necessary. These steps can help manage minor surface growth. However, visible spots on the ceiling often mean a more significant colony exists deep within the unit and ducting, which DIY cleaning cannot address. For a persistent damp smell or recurring spots, a professional inspection with microbial swab testing is recommended to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination, as continuous exposure to certain mould types can affect indoor air quality and health. |
