How to clean and prevent bathroom ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bathroom, right where the wall meets the ceiling. It's the bathroom without a window, so it's always a bit humid after showers. I try to run the exhaust fan, but I'm worried it's not enough, especially with this humid weather we've been having lately. What's the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Bathroom ceiling mold in Dubai is primarily driven by the high ambient humidity and condensation from hot showers, especially in windowless bathrooms. Your exhaust fan may not be sufficient if it's undersized or if the bathroom isn't sealed properly.
For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For small areas, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is often effective. Apply, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and wipe dry. Avoid bleach; it only removes the surface colour and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Prevention is critical. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet surfaces, including walls and the ceiling, with a squeegee or towel to remove condensation immediately. Consider upgrading to a higher-capacity exhaust fan if the current one isn't moving enough air. For persistent or large-scale mold (covering more than a square meter), or if it returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be deeper within the ceiling void or behind tiles. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab testing to identify the species is recommended to develop a targeted, permanent remediation plan. |
