How to clean and prevent black mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the wall doesn’t get any air flow. With the humidity rising again, what’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and stagnant air. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. First, put on an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or use a commercial mold remover. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Discard any cleaning cloths used.

Preventing its return is the real challenge. The wall behind the wardrobe needs airflow. Move the furniture at least two inches away from the wall. Consider using a small, discreet dehumidifier or moisture absorber in that room, as year-round AC can still leave pockets of high humidity, especially in enclosed spaces. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a faulty unit is a major moisture source.

However, if the area is larger than a square foot, the mold has penetrated the drywall, or the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Disturbing larger colonies can spread spores. An inspector can use a moisture meter to find the exact water source and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This is crucial for health concerns, as some species require more aggressive containment. Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on mold remediation for rental properties, and a verified lab report can be important for landlord communications.
