How to clean and prevent black mold near AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from black mold in their bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots starting to form in the corner of the ceiling where the wall meets. It’s right next to the AC vent, which seems to be dripping a little condensation. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, especially with our high humidity?

Black mold near an AC vent is often triggered by condensation, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate. The moisture from the dripping vent provides the perfect environment for mold to grow.

For a small, visible patch like this, you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent, not just bleach, as vinegar kills the mold at the root. Thoroughly dry the area afterwards with a fan.

The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Wipe down the condensation from the AC vent regularly. Have an AC technician service the unit to correct the dripping issue, as it's likely due to a blocked drain line or low refrigerant. Improving ventilation in the room can also help reduce humidity levels.

However, with children experiencing respiratory symptoms and the mold's proximity to the AC system, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Visible spots can be the tip of the iceberg, and spores may be circulating through the ductwork. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping and often air or surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent of the problem, which is essential for effective remediation and preventing recurrence.
