How to clean and prevent black mold on window seals?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots forming around the edges of our bedroom windows. It’s the room we use the AC the most, and with the humidity rising again, I’m worried it’s going to get worse. What’s the most effective way to clean this off and prevent it from coming back for good, especially on the window seals?

Black mold on window seals is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The cold air from the AC hits the warm window glass, causing condensation that creates the damp environment mold needs to grow.
For cleaning, first identify the surface. On non-porous window frames (uPVC, aluminum, glass), use a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Always wear gloves and a mask. Scrub the visible mold away with a brush, then wipe the area dry completely. Prevention is more critical than cleaning. The goal is to control moisture. Wipe down any condensation on your windows and seals daily with a dry cloth. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent, reasonable temperature; excessive cooling increases condensation. Check that the room is well-sealed when the AC is on to prevent humid outdoor air from entering. For a persistent problem, the underlying cause is often excess ambient humidity in the room. A professional inspection can identify if your AC unit is properly sized and functioning to dehumidify the space effectively, which is the only long-term solution. In many cases, improving room ventilation or using a dedicated dehumidifier is necessary to keep humidity below 60%, the threshold where mold thrives. |
