How to clean and prevent closet mold from AC humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there, and everything smells damp. I think it's because the AC vent is directly above it and it's been so humid lately. What's the best way to clean this and prevent it from happening again once I get a dehumidifier?

First, remove all affected items from the closet to prevent further contamination. For leather goods, wipe them down with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. Test this on a small, hidden area first. Allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. The closet interior itself should be thoroughly cleaned with a microfiber cloth and the same vinegar solution or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and not the root structure.

This is a classic Dubai issue caused by the extreme humidity condensing on cool surfaces near the AC vent. The chilled air from the vent directly above is hitting the warmer closet surfaces, creating condensation and providing the moisture mould needs to grow.

Prevention is key. A dehumidifier is an excellent solution; place it in the bedroom and run it, especially during the more humid summer months. Increase air circulation around the closet by keeping its doors open whenever possible and ensuring it is not overstuffed. You might also consider having your AC unit serviced to ensure it is draining condensation properly and not contributing excess moisture.

Given that the mould has already affected stored items, the spores are likely airborne within that enclosed space. For a thorough resolution, a professional inspection can identify the specific mould type and the full extent of the issue, which is often beyond what's visible. They can also perform an air quality test to confirm the spore count has returned to a safe level after cleaning.
