How to clean and prevent closet mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve spotted these small black specks on the wall behind our winter clothes. We keep the closet closed most of the time, and it’s been incredibly humid lately. What’s the best way to clean this off and stop it from coming back for good?

That black speckling is almost certainly mold, fuelled by the combination of a water leak and Dubai's high humidity trapped in a closed space. Your priority is to address the source of the moisture first; otherwise, it will return no matter how well you clean.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A simple solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mildew remover is often effective. Scrub the affected wall surface thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and does not kill the roots, allowing the mold to regrow. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried. A fan directed into the closet will help, but a dehumidifier is the best tool for the job in our climate.

However, the leak itself is the critical issue. The AC drain line is likely clogged or the drain pan is cracked. This requires an AC technician to fix the root cause. Until that leak is permanently repaired, the mold problem will persist.

To prevent recurrence, you must manage the environment. Keeping the closet door closed in a humid room creates a stagnant, moist microclimate. Consider leaving the door ajar periodically to allow air circulation. For a long-term solution in a problematic area like this, a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier or silica gel packs placed inside the closet can help maintain low humidity levels and protect your stored clothes.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odour, or if anyone in the household experiences respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is warranted. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and ensure remediation is complete, which is particularly important for sensitive individuals.
