How to clean and prevent closet mold in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots forming in the corners of our master bedroom closet on the outer wall. It’s on the second floor of our villa in Jumeirah. The closet is packed with clothes and feels a bit damp to the touch, especially after the recent humidity. What’s the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Black spots forming in a packed closet on an outer villa wall in Jumeirah are a classic sign of condensation mould, highly common here due to the high humidity and temperature differentials between our cool AC interiors and the hot exterior walls.

For cleaning, first remove all items from the closet. Protect yourself with an N95 mask and gloves. The mould is likely surface-level, so scrubbing the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mould-cleaning detergent can be effective. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not address the underlying moisture. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards.

Prevention is the critical step, as it will return without addressing the moisture source. The packed clothes restricted airflow and created a microclimate of trapped humidity against the cold wall. Reduce clutter to allow air to circulate. Leave some space between the wall and your clothing. A small electric dehumidifier or disposable moisture absorber placed inside the closet can make a significant difference. Ensure your AC is serviced and functioning correctly, as it is your primary dehumidification system.

For a persistent issue on an outer wall, the problem could be more complex, such as a minor insulation issue or a hidden condensation point within the wall cavity. If the mould returns quickly after a thorough cleaning and implementing these measures, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to identify the exact condensation source for a permanent solution.
