How to clean and prevent mold around AC vents?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be constantly damp, and I've started seeing these small black spots around the vent in the master bedroom. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, considering our weather?

Black spots around AC vents in humid climates like Dubai are typically surface mold feeding on dust and condensation. Start by mixing one part white vinegar with three parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the affected area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. Avoid bleach; it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root structure.
Preventing recurrence requires managing moisture. Ensure your AC's temperature isn't set so low that it causes excessive condensation on the vents; 23-24°C is often sufficient. Run the fan mode for a short period after turning off the cooling to help dry the internal coils and ducts. Regularly replacing or cleaning your AC's air filter is also critical, as a dirty filter reduces airflow and increases moisture retention. For persistent or recurring mold, especially if there's a musty odor when the AC runs, the issue is likely inside the ductwork or evaporator coil, which requires professional assessment. In such cases, a company with microbiological testing can identify the specific mold type and source, as superficial cleaning won't resolve a deeper contamination. |
