How to clean and prevent mold on closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a weird black speckled patch growing on the back wall of our master bedroom closet. It's been incredibly humid in Dubai this month and the closet is on the exterior wall. What's the best way to get this cleaned properly and make sure it doesn't come back?

That black speckled patch is classic mould growth, and your assessment of the climate and wall location is spot on. In Dubai, exterior walls are prone to thermal bridging, where the intense outdoor heat meets your cooled interior air, creating a perfect cold surface for condensation to form. Combined with the high humidity, this condensation soaks into the wall, providing the moisture mould needs to feed on organic materials like drywall or paint.

For cleaning, first assess the extent. If the patch is smaller than a standard A4 sheet of paper, you can likely manage it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning detergent, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface colour and does not kill the roots. Allow the area to dry completely using a fan.

Preventing its return is the critical part. You must address the moisture source. The closet's lack of air circulation is a major factor. Leave the closet doors open for several hours a day to allow your room's AC to dehumidify the space. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a moisture absorber like silica gel packs inside. For a more permanent solution, have a technician check if the AC vent in your bedroom is properly balanced to ensure adequate airflow reaches that exterior wall.

If the patch is larger, has a musty odour, or returns after cleaning, the mould may have penetrated deeper into the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the full scope and perform remediation, which may involve removing affected drywall to treat the cavity. They can also use thermal imaging to pinpoint exactly where the condensation is occurring.
