How to clean and prevent recurring wall mold from AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be making everything feel damp. I started noticing a few black spots along the edge of my bedroom wall, right behind the headboard, about a month ago. The room has a constant musky smell now that I can’t get rid of, even with cleaning. What’s the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The dampness and black spots are classic signs of condensation-induced mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The wall behind the headboard is likely a cold spot where moisture from the air condenses, providing the damp environment mold needs to grow.
For cleaning, first move the headboard to allow the area to dry completely. Small surface mold on non-porous surfaces can often be cleaned with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, if the mold has penetrated the paint or drywall, surface cleaning will not remove the root structure and it will return. Prevention is the critical step. The mold will recur unless you address the moisture source. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to reduce the drastic temperature difference between the cold wall and the room air that causes condensation. Improve air circulation behind the headboard by moving it slightly away from the wall. Using a dehumidifier in the room can also help manage ambient moisture levels. For a persistent problem with a musky odor, the issue may be more extensive inside the wall cavity or within the AC unit itself, which is common here. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact condensation source and extent of growth. In many cases, remediation involves correcting the thermal bridging on the wall and potentially treating the AC ductwork, followed by post-remediation verification to ensure the problem is resolved. |
