How to clean and prevent wall mold from humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the edges of the bedroom wall behind our wardrobe. It’s the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried it might be from the humidity. What's the best way to get this properly cleaned and treated so it doesn't come back?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation-related mold, extremely common in Dubai due to the high outdoor humidity meeting your cold, air-conditioned interior walls. That wall facing the outside is a prime location for this thermal bridging effect.
For cleaning, first move the wardrobe to allow the area to dry completely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For surface mold on non-porous paint, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective; scrub gently. However, if the mold has penetrated the plasterboard or is extensive, cleaning the surface is only temporary and it will likely return. The underlying moisture issue must be addressed. Preventing its return is the critical part. This requires lowering the wall's humidity. Ensure your AC is powerful enough for the room size and set to a temperature that doesn't cause excessive condensation; 22-24°C is often a good range. Improve air circulation behind the furniture; even a small gap between the wardrobe and the wall can make a significant difference. A dehumidifier can also help, especially during the more humid winter months. For a persistent or large-scale problem, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall's moisture content and identify any potential hidden issues within the wall cavity. They can perform remediation that includes antimicrobial treatments to prevent regrowth, which is a more permanent solution than DIY cleaning. The goal is to verify the mold is gone and the conditions for its growth are corrected. |
