How to clean and prevent wardrobe mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit, and now we’ve found small black spots on the back of our wardrobe. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and we’re worried it’s mold. What’s the most effective way to clean this ourselves to stop it from spreading and prevent it from coming back?

Black spots on the wardrobe are likely mould from the AC condensation leak combined with our high humidity. The most effective approach is to address both the moisture source and the existing growth.

First, stop the leak. Have your AC unit serviced to fix the drainage issue; this is the primary cause. Without this step, the mould will return. For the existing mould on a hard surface like a wardrobe, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product, then dry it thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can leave moisture behind.

To prevent recurrence, manage indoor humidity, which is critical in Dubai. Ensure your AC is running effectively and consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months. Improve air circulation around the wardrobe by moving it slightly away from the wall.

If the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, has a musty odour, or you or family members are experiencing unexplained allergies or respiratory issues, a professional inspection is advised. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration, which is the only way to confirm the health risk and ensure remediation is complete. For persistent problems hidden within the AC system itself, specialized cleaning by a certified HVAC hygiene provider is often necessary.
