How to clean bathroom black mold and prevent spreading?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the bathroom wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been extra humid lately and I think the steam from our showers isn’t ventilating properly through the small window. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading behind the walls?

Bathroom black mold in Dubai is common due to our high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small patch you just noticed, you can clean it yourself safely.
Wear a mask and gloves. Mix one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle; vinegar is effective against most common household molds. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push spores into the air while leaving the root intact. To prevent it from returning, you must control the moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If your window is the only ventilation, keep it open during and long after bathing. Wipe down wet walls and ceilings with a squeegee. A dehumidifier can also help significantly in a poorly ventilated bathroom. The concern about it spreading behind the walls is valid if the moisture source is persistent. Mold grows on damp organic material. If the wallboard or paint is constantly wet from condensation or a hidden leak, growth can occur unseen. If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, if the patch is larger than one square meter, or if you notice a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall cavity. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for spread without destructive tearing. |
