how to clean bathroom mold and improve ventillation?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It's been extra humid lately and I think the bathroom exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be calling my building management to check the ventilation?

For a small patch of black mold in your bathroom, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover spray or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 4 parts water). Let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes to kill the spores before scrubbing and rinsing. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during the process.

The underlying issue is almost certainly excess humidity, a common problem in Dubai bathrooms where powerful AC creates significant temperature differentials. Your exhaust fan is likely undersized. It should be strong enough to hold a piece of toilet paper against the vent when running. If it can't, it's ineffective. Wiping down wet surfaces after showering and leaving the fan running for at least 30 minutes afterwards can help manage moisture.

You should absolutely notify your building management in Jumeirah. Under Dubai regulations, building owners are responsible for maintaining common ventilation systems, including the ducting that connects your bathroom fan to the outside. A weak fan could indicate a blocked duct or a faulty central extraction system that serves multiple units, which they are obligated to inspect and repair.

If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, or if the affected area is larger than one square meter, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out a more serious moisture issue within the wall cavity. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and the source of the moisture, which is critical for a permanent solution.
