How to clean bathroom mold and inform landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower door meets the tiles. It's been really humid lately and I think the bathroom's ventilation isn't strong enough to keep up. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be reporting this to my landlord as a maintenance issue?

For a small patch in JVC's humidity, use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1:10 with water). Apply, let sit for 10 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Always wear gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling spores.

This is absolutely a maintenance issue for your landlord. Under Dubai rental law (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are responsible for major maintenance and structural issues, which includes fixing the root cause of mold like inadequate ventilation. Inform them in writing with photos, clearly stating the location and that it's a recurring issue due to poor bathroom extraction. They are obligated to address the ventilation fault.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or covers an area larger than one square meter, the underlying moisture problem is significant. In this case, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture in walls or behind tiles, which is common here due to condensation from year-round AC use and high humidity.
