How to clean black mold and fix moisture issue?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been extra humid in Dubai lately. What's the best way to clean this safely and who should I call to check for a more serious moisture problem in the building?

That black, fuzzy patch is a common issue in Dubai, especially on exterior walls during humid periods. The wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing condensation and creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe it down and allow it to dry completely. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process.

However, cleaning only addresses the symptom. The underlying moisture issue must be fixed to prevent it from returning. In the UAE, this persistent dampness on an exterior wall can indicate a thermal bridging issue or a minor crack in the building envelope allowing humid air to penetrate.

Given the location and the fact it's on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the source. A certified mold inspector can use a moisture meter to check the wall's saturation level and a thermal camera to identify cold spots. They can determine if the problem is internal condensation or an external leak. For a verifiable diagnosis, the inspector should provide a detailed report with their findings, not just a verbal assessment.

For serious, recurring, or large-scale mold problems, remediation by a company with its own microbiology lab ensures the correct species is identified and the cleanup method is scientifically validated for that specific type.
