How to clean black mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom closet seems to be leaking a little, and now I've found a patch of black mold on the wall behind my clothes. It's been super humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's just going to get worse. What's the most effective way to clean this off the painted wall and is there a specific dehumidifier or product you'd recommend to stop it from coming back?

The black mold you've described is a serious concern, particularly in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for growth. The leak from your AC unit is the primary moisture source that must be addressed immediately.

For a small patch (less than 1 square foot) on a non-porous painted wall, you can attempt a careful cleaning. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and placing a towel at the base. Use a solution of detergent and water to scrub the visible growth. Do not use bleach, as it only discolors the surface and does not kill the root structure. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area with a fan. However, this addresses only the surface contamination.

The critical step is eliminating the moisture source. The AC leak must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician. This is not optional. The constant drip inside the wall cavity has likely caused more extensive mold growth on the back of the drywall and within the insulation, which you cannot see. This hidden growth will continue to release spores and present a health risk.

Given the conditions you've described, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified mold inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air sampling to assess the full extent of the problem behind the wall, in compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards. Remediation often requires controlled demolition, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure it is resolved completely.

To manage ambient humidity, use a desiccant dehumidifier rated for the UAE's climate, which is more effective in high temperatures than refrigerant models. Set it to maintain humidity below 50%.
