How to clean black mold and prevent spread in AC?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been extra humid lately and I think the bathroom’s exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading into the AC ducts?

For a small patch in your bathroom, start by mixing one part bleach with four parts water. Apply it to the mold, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.
The real solution is addressing the humidity. In Dubai's climate, bathroom exhaust fans are often undersized for the steam generated. Run the fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet walls and leaving the bathroom door open helps too. This removes the moisture mold needs to grow. Regarding AC ducts, spread from a localized bathroom source is less common. Mold in ducts typically originates from a separate issue, like a clogged condensate drain pan inside the AC unit itself. If you notice a musty smell emanating from the AC vents when it turns on, that is a clearer sign of a problem within the system that would require a professional inspection. For peace of mind, a surface sample sent for lab analysis can confirm the mold type and its potential health implications, which is a standard practice here. |
