How to clean black mold and prevent spreading?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall itself, and the room has felt a bit damp lately, especially since the weather changed. What's the best way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading to the rest of the house?

That black fuzzy patch is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from AC units. It's a sign of excess moisture in that wall cavity, possibly from a small leak or thermal bridging where cold meets warm air.

For a small patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a vinegar solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes surface color and doesn't address the moisture source. After scrubbing, dry the area completely with a fan. Dispose of any cleaning rags immediately.

To prevent it from spreading or returning, you must control the humidity. This room likely has poor air circulation. Run a dehumidifier or a fan in the room, especially after showers. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent temperature and that its drain line isn't blocked, as this can cause excess humidity. Leave the closet doors open to improve airflow.

The real concern is the hidden moisture within the wall. If the patch returns within a few days, the leak is likely ongoing. In Dubai's climate, this internal dampness can lead to widespread mould growth inside wall cavities, which then spores into your living space. For a recurring problem, a professional inspection with a borescope is needed to assess the wall's interior and identify the exact moisture source. They can also perform air quality tests to determine if spores have spread, which is a common next step for health reassurance.
