How to clean black mold and stop AC spread?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten worse. What's the best way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading through the AC?

That black patch is likely Stachybotrys, which thrives on cellulose-rich materials like drywall in high humidity. Dubai's climate, especially during humid summer months, creates perfect conditions for this on exterior walls where temperature differences cause condensation.

For a small patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated. Discard any moldy porous items like cardboard boxes. The goal is to remove the mold, not just kill it, as dead spores can still cause irritation.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. An exterior wall leak is a common culprit in UAE villas. Check for cracks in the rendering or failed sealant around windows. A dehumidifier or consistently running your AC on a dry setting can help maintain indoor humidity below 60%, which inhibits new growth.

Regarding AC spread: your central AC can distribute spores from one room to another if the mold is actively disturbed. While cleaning, seal the closet and consider turning the AC off temporarily. If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, the issue is systemic and requires professional assessment. A certified mold inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden moisture source and take air samples to confirm if spores have entered your ductwork, which would necessitate a different cleaning protocol.
