How to clean black mold from AC vent myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been making this weird damp smell for the past couple of weeks, and now I’ve spotted small black patches on the inside of the vent. We run it constantly because of the heat, and I’m worried the moisture is just making it worse. What’s the best way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading, and should I be calling the building management to check the main unit?

Black mold in AC vents requires careful handling. For small, visible patches on the vent cover itself, you can clean it yourself with proper precautions. First, turn the AC unit off completely at the thermostat. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.
Remove the vent cover according to its design (usually with screws or clips). Soak it in a solution of warm water and mild detergent to loosen the debris. For the mold, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a diluted white vinegar solution; avoid bleach as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage components. Scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely before reinstalling. This only addresses the visible spores on the vent cover. The damp smell indicates active growth deeper within the system, likely on the cooling coils or in the drip pan due to our constant high-humidity usage. This internal contamination cannot be cleaned DIY and is the main source of the problem and the odor. You should absolutely inform building management. Dubai Municipality regulations hold property owners responsible for maintaining central AC systems to ensure indoor air quality. They need to inspect and professionally clean the entire main unit, ductwork, and drain pan. For a definitive diagnosis of the mold type, a professional inspection with lab testing is recommended, as some species require specific remediation protocols. |
