How to clean black mold from AC vent?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been making this weird damp smell every time it kicks on, and I just found small black spots around the vent on the wall. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a few weeks ago. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading, and should I be getting my building’s maintenance involved to check the main unit?

Black spots around an AC vent in Dubai's humidity are almost certainly mold, fed by condensation from your cooling system. For a small, visible patch confined to the vent cover, you can clean it yourself carefully.
First, turn the AC unit off at the thermostat to prevent spreading spores. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Remove the vent cover and soak it in a solution of warm water and detergent. For the visible mold on the wall around the opening, scrub with a mixture of white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), ensuring the area is well-ventilated. Let the surface dry completely before reinstalling the clean vent. However, the vent is just the symptom. The damp smell indicates mold is growing inside the duct or on the cooling coil itself, which you cannot reach. This is very common here when AC units run constantly. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface issue; the internal colony will continue to regrow and spread spores into your bedroom. For this reason, involving your building's maintenance is a necessary step. They are responsible for the main unit and central ductwork. Request they inspect and clean the evaporator coil and drain pan, which are the most common sources of this moisture and smell. If the problem persists after their cleaning, a professional inspection with surface and air sampling can identify the specific mold type and concentration, which is important for assessing health risks and verifying the remediation's effectiveness. |
