How to clean black mold from bathroom grout myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed these black spots growing in the grout between the wall tiles behind the toilet. It's in the guest bathroom that we barely use, so it must be from the humidity sitting in there. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company?

Start with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Apply it generously to the grout and let it sit for at least an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. For persistent spots, a paste of baking soda and water applied after the vinegar can help. Always wear a mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity means this is often a recurring issue, especially in a rarely used bathroom where air doesn't circulate. After cleaning, the most critical step is to reduce moisture. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for an hour after any shower and consider using a small dehumidifier or even a portable fan in that room to keep air moving and surfaces dry.

If the mould has penetrated deeply into porous grout or if the area is larger than one square foot, DIY cleaning may only remove surface discoloration. The root colony can remain. A professional inspection is recommended in such cases to assess penetration and identify any hidden moisture sources, as they use moisture meters and borescopes. For health safety, if anyone in the household has asthma or allergies, it's better to have a specialist handle it from the start.
